this hurts 🥺

I don’t think any of us want to intentionally hurt people or be hurt by people but that “intention” doesn’t keep hurt from happening…

I heard a story the other day and have been chewing on it ever since. It was about a person who went out for the entire day. It began raining pretty early on and fortunately they had an umbrella.

The rain stopped after an hour, so they closed the umbrella and held onto it!

and held it.

and started debating if it’s worth keeping around

and found a place to ditch it.

The moral of the story is, the thing that once was a benefit to them was no longer useful and it was tossed aside. Maybe you have tossed people aside when they were no longer useful to you or maybe you were tossed aside when you were no longer useful to them. Either way, because we are messy people with a selfish nature, we can intentionally or unintentionally use others and be used. And it hurts…

If you feel disconnected from this topic here are some ways that we have used others and been used by others…

have stayed in relationships that were unhealthy because it was filling our loneliness.
have had people prioritize us as friends because of what they wanted from us.
failed to have tough conversations because feared the friendship would end.
have gotten frequent texts when someone is in a tough spot but when they are good we don’t hear from them anymore
the list can go on…

When scripture tells us that we are more blessed to give than receive (Acts 20:35), or the Son of Man came not to be served and to serve (Mark 10:45), we see not only the call for us to be “people centric” but what does that pre-suppose? That we have a “bend” towards being “me centric” and we have to resist those urges that cause us to use others while they are useful to us and then forget about them when they are not.

And if you’re on the other side of the equation then we need to pray for discernment of what relationships are taking advantage of us and to make sure we are being a benefit for people in a healthy way, not in a way that can lead to being used and abused.
