the blame game

This may be a tough pill to swallow, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take it. And when we say “take it,” we mean taking responsibility for our actions.

We heard a quote recently that said, “Don’t get mad at the wind for making a mess when you opened the window,” and it hit its target: us. lol It’s such a simple thought but powerful, and here’s why taking responsibility can actually be a huge blessing to you.

Let’s be honest; it’s much easier to blame outside forces for our setbacks and frustrations than to look inward. Imagine coming home to a house that’s torn up inside. Our first thought would be “we’ve been robbed!” or “I can’t believe that storm did this!” It’s so much easier to blame a potential theft or some crazy weather for the mess than to realize, “well, we left the window open.”

Now, let us be clear: we’re not saying that bad things don’t happen to innocent people. But sometimes, our habits, short-sighted decisions, or reactions can create environments that bring in more mess than we planned.

So why is admitting our part or accepting responsibility helpful?

  • It Ignites Growth: When we own up to our role in a situation, we take back the power to change it versus the situation changing us. Growth starts when we see past obstacles to what we want to opportunities to learn.

  • It Gets Rid of the Victim Mentality: When we accept responsibility, we break free from seeing ourselves as helpless in the face of our circumstances. Instead, we’re able to see areas where we can make real changes and take action, shifting from “why me?” to “what can I do?”

  • It Sets You Free: Accepting responsibility frees you from being constantly affected by outside circumstances. By focusing on what you can control, you experience greater peace by letting go of what you can’t and you become a better steward of what you can control!

Taking responsibility isn’t about guilt—it’s about freedom, growth, and setting ourselves up for the life that isn’t dictated by what happens to us but rather what God does through us!
