Do You Want God… or Just What He Can Do?
Got woken up at 2am last night—our youngest was struggling. Could’ve been teething, could’ve been all the travel and fun and games (HBD, Nany!). Either way, I was half-asleep on the couch, Tori was in the bedroom with Micah, as the bed couldn’t fit the 3 of us, and Noah was in the pack ‘n play. Not ideal, but we were making it work!
I started going through the motions— make bottle, offer comfort, start rocking, prepare for transfer. But nothing was working. He didn’t want the bottle. He didn’t need to be rocked. He wasn’t asking for a quick fix to help him fall back asleep. He didn’t want ANY of that.
He just wanted me. His father.
Not what I could do for him. Not my resources. Not a favor to “get him by” until he felt better. Just me.
And that’s when it hit me—how often do I come to God, not because I want Him, but because I want something from Him?
I immediately felt the weight of it. I hate to admit this, but lately 99% of my prayer life has been asking God to fix things, provide things, or make things easier. I haven’t been asking for Him—I’ve been asking for what He has or can do for me.
But what if we stopped just coming to God just for answers, solutions, or resources? What if we also came simply because He is our Father and we just need Him? No agenda. No requests. Just His presence.
That’s what I’m focusing on this week—spending time with God, not for what He can do, but just for who He is.

When the Israelites reach Sinai, there is a literary reference to the _____ when God commands them not to touch the mountain for whosoever touches the mountain is doomed to die.

If you’ve been in the same place, I encourage you to join me. Spend time with God this week—not to ask for anything, but just to be with Him. Because sometimes, what we think we need isn’t the bottle or the rocking or the quick fix. Sometimes, we just need our Father.
